From Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 12, 2008 is: divulge ... More
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 12, 2008 is: divulge \duh-VULJ\ verb : to make known (as a confidence or secret) Example sentence: Sarah promised not to divulge the news of her friend's promotion until it was official. Did you know? It isn't vulgar to make known the roots of "divulge" -- and that sentence contains two hints about the word's origin. "Divulge" was borrowed into Middle English in the 15th century from Latin "divulgare," a word that combines the prefix "dis-," which meant "apart" or "in different directions" in Latin, with "vulgare," meaning "to make known." "Vulgare," in turn, derives from the Latin noun "vulgus," meaning "mob or common people." As you have no doubt guessed, English "vulgar" is another word which can be traced back to "vulgus; it came into use about a century before "divulge. Less

By Jeremiah Tolbert. Read by Philippa Ballantine (of Chasing the Bard). Audible.com Promotion! Get your free audiobook at: http://audible.com/escapepodsff Nobody went home to their Elderfolk while we waited for Niles to come back. That was a rule. If Niles never came back, then we wouldn’t have to. Nobody wanted to see the meanies anyway. They had us Made and then hated us afterwards, which wasn’t fair. All arties know you love the things you Make no matter what. But Elderfolk were just-plains all grown up and they didn’t make any sense at all. Some of the younger arties started to talk about going back, but we older arties who knew Niles better said no, that we’d wait. Three days passed before Niles came back. It was dark and everyone was sleeping but me, because little Boo’s music itched in my brain. He came in carrying big boxes, and I cried big tears of happy at that. He’d brought some new supplies, and we’d be Making again in no time flat. I watched him for a while, carrying in box after box, and finally I fell asleep. It felt good knowing he was back. Rated PG. Contains some harsh slang and violence against the system. Referenced Sites: The Dispatches of Dr. Roundbottom Philippa Ballantine’s official site Less

In the summer of 1948, twenty-three year old Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964) arrived at Yaddo. She had just earned her M.F.A from the University of Iowa, where she was considered quiet, provincial, and extremely talented. That summer at Yaddo she proved to be every bit as talented as expected, but perhaps less shy. She befriended writer Robert Lowell, who introduced her to the man who would become her agent. But Lowell also introduced her to trouble. In February 1949, Lowell charged that Executive Director Elizabeth Ames knowingly harbored Communists at Yaddo, and demanded she be removed from office. O'Connor joined Lowell, and their accusations unleashed a maelstrom in New York City literary circles. Somehow, O'Connor managed to disentangle herself from the ensuing fracas, seemingly unscathed. But the short stories she penned in its immediate aftermath, such as "Enoch and the Gorilla" and "A Good Man is Hard to Find," labored over themes of morally ambiguous or flawed action, and the thirst for celebrityâor at least, notorietyâthat comes with self-determination.Perhaps, then, the ending to her chapter at Yaddo was not so clean as was imagined.
