My Neckar Valley - Martin Jarrett from Newcastle, Australia

From Discover Germany | My... | Video Podcast | Deutsche Welle

Federal State: Baden-Württemberg Martin Jarrett from Newcastle in A... More

Federal State: Baden-Württemberg Martin Jarrett from Newcastle in Australia is travelling in Germany. Back home in Australia, he studies law, and at present he has an internship with a US law firm in Mannheim. This February, however, he is on a visit in the Odenwald region. He visits the Neckar Valley, about 50 kilometres east of Heidelberg in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The Neckartal, or Neckar Valley, borders both banks of the River Neckar between Mannheim and Heilbronn in north-eastern Baden-Württemberg. It comprises a surface area of 1300 square kilometres extending through the Odenwald Neckartal Nature Park, which is the northernmost of seven nature reserves in the state of Baden-Württemberg. The Neckar is the most important river in the nature reserve. The romantic river valley is famous for its beauty and largely untouched nature. The best way to explore the region is by bicycle or boat along the Neckar, but a drive along one of Germany’s loveliest valley roads also provides a glorious view of the vineyards, forests and castles along it. Martin Jarrett says the countryside is beautiful, but unfortunately too cold in the winter. We go on to the small fortified village of Dilsberg with its citadel, perched atop a hill over the Neckar Valley, not far from Neckargemünd. Martin Jarrett is impressed by how small the houses are, and says the doors are so small it reminds him of a miniature town. In fact, Dilsberg has a long history. Archaeological finds attest to the presence of Roman troops there, although documentation is much more complete after the Middle Ages. Much of the castle was built in the twelfth century. There are many castles in the Neckar Valley, like the one at our next stop: Neckarsteinach. Martin Jarrett remarks has four castles. He calculates that, with a population of about four thousand, that gives the town one castle for every thousand residents. The town was first mentioned in a document in 1142. While the ensemble of three castles, the Vorderburg, Mittleburg and Hinterburg, were built at around about the same time in the second half of the 12th century, Schadeck Castle was not built until about 1260. Nowadays this ensemble of four mediæval castles is unique in Germany. The residents of Neckarsteinach lived mainly from shipping until into the 19th century. Today the Neckar is a frequently used federal waterway. The last stop is Eberbach, a delightful town of half-timbered houses. The tallest tree in Germany is to be found here: a 62.4 metre high Douglas fir. Martin Jarrett notices a special connection to his home country, Australia, here as well. Queen Victoria, the longest reigning British monarch, is said to have been conceived here in Haus Talheim, while here parents were living there on an extended holiday. She was, of course, also monarch of Australia. Martin Jarrett has also come here to taste a local speciality, Eberbach Victoria cake, created in honour of the queen. While he enjoys his cake, he leaves us with his best wishes for all Discover Germany viewers. Less

Recommended – Roland Welke, dramaturge at Berlin’s famous Friedrichstadtpalast, shows us his favorite spots in town

Federal State Berlin Born in Potsdam, Roland Welke studied cultural and theater studies in Berlin. While a student, he worked at the Friedrichstadtpalast as an intern, then as an assistant on productions there. He gained further experience at Berlin's Theater des Westens. Sine 1999, Roland Welke has been part of the team at the Friedrichstadtpalast. When he wants to give himself a real treat, Roland Welke has breakfast at the Hotel Savoy. He meets his friends here, because he appreciates the relaxed and quiet atmosphere - just one of the reasons why he feels welcome in the nearly 80-year-old hotel. This, his first recommendation, is also where famous names such as former German chancellor Ludwig Ehrhardt and Maria Callas felt at home. Welke's second recommendation is the unique panorama from the Weidendammer Bridge, leading from Fredrichstrasse in the heart of the city, with its view of the government district and the Berliner Ensemble theater. This was where Erich Kästner was moved to admire and praise Berlin's inimitability. For art-lovers, Roland Welke recommends the galleries on Auguststrasse in Berlin's Mitte district. Here in what's called the Scheunenviertel, where there used to be little shops for groceries and other daily necessities, you can now find art of all kinds. Less

The Amateur Traveler talks to Douglas Duckett about his travels to ... More

The Amateur Traveler talks to Douglas Duckett about his travels to Israel and his popular travel guide to Israel. Douglas has fallen in love not just with the "holy land" but with the modern nation of Israel. We address the issue of "is it safe to travel to Israel" at this time when Israel is at war with the Palestinians in Gaza. He takes us on a virtual trip from the beaches and night life of Tel Aviv, through the working city of Haifa with the beautiful Baha'i gardens and the informative museum about the modern jewish immigration. We stop at Lake Kinneret (also known as The Sea of Galilee, also Sea of Genneseret, or Lake Tiberias) at the town of Tiberius. We make a detour to the historic site of Gamla the "Masada of the North" before turning our face toward Jerusalem. On the way to Jerusalem we stop at Megiddo (Armageddon in the bible) and the roman ruins at Beit-Shean. In Jerusalem we talk about the overwhelming religious and historic significance of the city and how some people come down with " Jerusalem syndrome". We suggest a walking tour of the city, a tour of the Mount of Olives, the holocaust memorial and the Israel museum. We also talk about the work the Jerusalem YMCA is doing to promote peace with their peace preschool that teaches Jewish and Palestinian children together. Less

Federal State BavariaTo take us to see his first sight, Michi Brunner has to take off his skis. Not far from the ski run is the chapel 'The Visitation of the Virgin'. Of special note is the carved wooden altar depicting scenes from Mary's life. Brunner's second highlight is down in the valley, in the old town of Partenkirchen. Together with his 8-year-old son Lorenz, he takes us to the Werdenfels Museum in the historic Ludwigstrasse. The collection, the largest of its kind in Bavaria, includes Bavarian costumes, jewellry and many other artifacts from local village life on five storeys. A few kilometers outside Garmisch-Partenkirchen is Michi Brunner's third recommendation - the Partnach Gorge. Over thousands of years the mountain river, the Partnach, gouged out a deep ravine in the rock. Until the 18th century it was dangerous to enter the gorge. At the beginning of the 20th century paths were laid down and since then the Partnach Gorge has been safe for visitors - even in winter. Less

The end of our 3 season of doing the podcast and it has been rewarding. We now have over 1600 downloads per month plus we hear from many listeners. It is time to say thanks for listening. Year end bring lots of interesting topics for this month episode. After unsuccessfully searching for RV themed carols for last months episode, listener Don from Texas suggested "Livin' in a Mobile Home" by "Riders in the Sky" as a theme song with no holiday significance. An a joy it was to listen too after spending quite alot of effort to obtain the out of print CD from 1990. Then it is on to Homer Simpson and his trails with buying the "Ultra Land Behemoth" ultimate motorhome, from Bob's RV. We spend some time talking about new products introduced at the national RV show in Louisville in early December. Besides the interesting new RV configuration including a slide within a slide, there was a fuel cell electric generator. These and many more topics are on our agenda for this podcast so give it a listen and keep in touch via the listener comment line, 815/230-0772. Less
